The oldest reference to the celebration of Mother's Day comes from the times of ancient Greece where the entrance of the spring was celebrated in honor of “Réia” the mother of the gods, also in the ancient Roman empire it was celebrated at the beginning of March the “Matronalia”, 3 days dedicated to “Cybele” the mother of all Gods.
But it was Anna Jarvis, a university professor from the United States who, after losing her mother, wrote to various religious entities, merchants, and political parties suggesting the creation of a day in honor of mothers, She managed to make her wish come true when the American Congress approved the creation of Mother's Day, which would be held on the second Sunday of the month of May, thus being held on May 9, 1914 the first day of mothers.
In Portugal, this day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May, as this day is also celebrated on the day of Our Lady of Fatima.
